If you are looking for a meaningful gift to give your parents this Christmas, here is an idea for you!
Last Christmas, I was impressed by a gift my cousin, Stuart, gave to his parents. His gift was original, simple, and free, yet amazing at the same time! The gift was a list of things that he would never do so that he could have the Spirit with him and always keep the commandments.
This thoughtful gift impressed his parents, and it impressed me as well. Not only was this a written commitment to his parents, but it was also a conscious decision he made – a commitment to himself and Heavenly Father.
The commitment he made reminded me of this quote from Spencer W. Kimball:
“Develop discipline of self so that . . . you do not have to decide and re-decide what you will do when you are confronted with the same temptation time and time again. You need only decide some things once.”
SOOOOOO cool! Now that he has decided what he will do in bad situations, he can avoid temptations with added conviction and confidence.
When I heard about his idea, I recognized the fact that giving this gift can change our attitudes and ways of life, if we are sincere and truly committed to following through. This Christmas, I am going to (and I hope you will join me) write down a list and consciously commit to live the commandments by not doing certain things, loving those around me, attending the temple, making good habits and goals, going to church, magnifying my calling, and helping others feel God’s love for them through how I treat them.
I thought I would throw this gift idea out there for any of you that are interested! But whether or not we physically give this gift, let’s make a commitment to be better people this Christmas.
