I wasn’t sure what to write about for this article, so I said a prayer asking Heavenly Father what it should be about. Then a thought came to my mind – “Don’t forget to pray!” That got me thinking about the importance of prayer and how much it blesses my life. So today I’d like to share with you what I learned about recently in my scripture study and from conference talks I found. 🙂
When the Savior came to the Americas after His resurrection, a multitude gathered to hear His words. As Christ and His disciples taught, the people knelt “…and prayed to the Father in the name of Jesus.” As I read this, one verse in particular stood out to me:
“And it came to pass that Jesus blessed them as they did pray unto him; and his countenance did smile upon them, and the light of his countenance did shine upon them.” (3 Nephi 19:25)
Doesn’t it make you feel so loved to think that when you pray, the Savior smiles upon you and Heavenly Father truly listens? I know that He is willing to bless us and answer our prayers, and only waits for us to ask. In the words of President Henry B. Eyring, “Never forget that a loving God is as close as a prayer.”
Why do we pray?
“First, prayer is a humble acknowledgment that God is our Father and that the Lord Jesus Christ is our Savior and Redeemer. Second, it is a sincere confession of sin and transgression and a request for forgiveness. Third, it is recognition that we need help beyond our own ability. Fourth, it is an opportunity to express thanksgiving and gratitude to our Creator… Fifth, it is a privilege to ask Deity for specific blessings.” – President James E. Faust
When can we pray?
“Whenever we desire! Alma taught, ‘Counsel with the Lord in all thy doings, and he will direct thee for good; yea, when thou liest down at night lie down unto the Lord, … and when thou risest in the morning let thy heart be full of thanks unto God; and if ye do these things, ye shall be lifted up at the last day.’ Jesus reminded His disciples ‘that they should not cease to pray in their hearts.’” – Elder Russell M. Nelson
How can our prayers be improved?
“The trouble with most of our prayers is that we give them as if we were picking up the telephone and ordering groceries—we place our order and hang up. We need to meditate, contemplate, think of what we are praying about and for and then speak to the Lord as one man speaketh to another.” -President Gordon B. Hinckley
Pray for the Holy Ghost to be with you. Pray to know how to serve those around you. Pray to thank Heavenly Father for the many blessings He has given you. Pray for the strength to be a righteous example. And most of all, don’t forget to pray! 😉
