When I was in Seminary, one of my teachers taught us this genius way to keep your scripture journal organized. He told us to turn to the very back of our journal and create an index. We wrote each letter of the alphabet (about three or four to a page). Then for each subject we studied in our journals, we would index it in the back under the correct letter and write the page number next to it. For topics that we wrote about more than once, we would add the new page numbers next to the other ones. Indexing this way helps me to organize my thoughts and actually use my scripture study to help other people, write talks, give lessons, and remember what I’ve learned.
I started using this system in high school and it has helped me keep track of ideas and inspiration as well as scriptures and quotes that are important to me. When I was a senior in high school, this method saved my bacon when I walked into sacrament meeting and opened the program only to realize that I was supposed to speak! (My dad was the bishop and there was some confusion about who was going to ask me to speak.) Luckily I had my journal with me and I felt inspired about a topic and then had a bunch of thoughts and scriptures and quotes already prepared. To this day, I think that was the best talk I’ve ever given.
What are some ways you like to use a scripture journal? Have you tried using an index before?
