I know you have heard it a million times from your leaders: keep a journal while you read your scriptures! And really the main thought that comes with that suggestion is probably “I barely have time and energy to read my scriptures each day, how could I be expected to do more in my busy life?” Well I am here to tell you why you should do this!
Here is a quick summing up of my experience with scripture journaling so far:
So in June this summer I got out a notebook and decided to just do it. I made a scripture journal. I mean the suggestion had been put forth to me so many times that it must have some merit right? So I pulled out a notebook and on the first page wrote “I hereby declare this notebook my scripture journal!” and then I began! Since then I have been plowing through Alma, writing down any thoughts that come to my mind in connection with certain verses.
This is not to say I am a fast scripture reader though… in fact I have only gotten through around 25 chapters since the end of June. It sounds like a bit of a failure when I think of it that way. But despite how little I have gotten through, there has been soooooo much I have learned from those chapters and verses! I have found patterns of what I need to learn from my scriptures and have realized specific things I need to do from the examples of ancient missionaries and prophets.
I have not just kept this notebook as a scripture journal though. Every night I have written about tender mercies and little miracles that occurred in my life that day. And woah this is cool!!!! Never would I have remembered all these times I was blessed with out writing them down! I can look back to any date and see how I was blessed that day and that is a huge testimony builder to me. I can in no way deny that I have been blessed immensely in my life! This also helps me to wind down at night by ending the day on a positive note and being grateful for what I was blessed with.
There are many ways to improve your life and I am here to tell you this is one of them. No matter how busy this school year is, I can find things to be grateful about if I try and that is a tender mercy in itself. As I learn lessons from specific scripture verses I can go back and trace patterns on what I need to learn in my life right now. The scriptures are directly applicable to my life and yours right now. So go and figure out your own journaling method! Whatever you do, I know you won’t regret the few extra minutes you take on this each night.
